Lake Garda offers a very different visual atmosphere from many of Italy's better-known proposal destinations.

In Riva del Garda, the lake is framed by enormous mountain walls. The landscape feels almost cinematic, yet the waterfront still has corners where a proposal can feel personal rather than staged.  Rather than making the scenery compete with them, I wanted the photographs to show the relationship between the two: a small, intimate human moment taking place inside an extraordinary Italian landscape. A proposal lasts only a few seconds. That is why preparation matters. When I photograph a surprise engagement, I plan the position and photographic perspective beforehand so that the person proposing does not need to think about photography at the most important moment. Once the proposal begins, I document the sequence naturally: the realization, the question, the reaction and those first moments immediately after the answer. In these photographs from Riva del Garda, one of my favorite elements is the scale of the landscape behind them. The mountains and water remain calm while something enormous is happening in their lives in the foreground.
